Brand new super-duper computer, brand new operating system, and I can't do a damned thing with them.

It was a real struggle just getting what I wanted, and weeks after I got it all, I still don't have what I wanted, and it's all pretty much useless for what I want to do with it. The hardware is malfunctioning, and the software has me locked out for some unspecified "violation of terms" agreement.
I am a retired old Cobol, CICS, Mainframe dinosaur. Way, way back in the olden times, I went through the succession of punched tape, to punched-cards, to terminals, to "smart" terminals, to the first actual PCs, to Laptops, all used to program the big mainframes. And in that process we got and used all the extraneous (to us) office software such as word processors and spreadsheets, and databases other than on the mainframes.
Early on I was addicted to laptops and the docking stations that hooked them up to extra screens, printers, and, of course, the mainframes. And we could undock them, take them home, put them on our own personal docking stations and be prepared to repair things that blew up in the night on the mainframes, from home. And then just take them back in to work the next day and dock them up there.
So, that's what we're used to using. Laptops have just as much memory, power and innards as any desktop, so, why get a desktop?
But, I like to keep our stuff and our information our business, and so I prefer to keep everything on my computer, and not out there on the so-called cloud, which in actuality is somebody else's server (i.e., computer). It's not a cloud; it's another computer, other than mine.
Who is the top dog over the Dell Cloud?
- Michael Dell, who serves on the foundation board of the Marxist/Globalist World Economic Forum (WEF) with Klaus Schwab.
Who is the top dog over the Microsoft Cloud?
- Bill Gates, another Marxist/Globalist WEF-er.
Anyone involved with the anti-American and anti-Christian WEF or who hobnobs with the likes of Soros, Gates, Francis, Obama, Clinton and Schwab can't be all good.
All I'm saying is I don't want to backup and restore from the cloud, all I want to do is keep everything I need on my computer, keep passwords, bank and financial stuff off of my computer, and take personal responsibility for my own backups and restores.
So right off the bat that put me in contention with the business philosophy of Microsoft. We are upgrading from an old MS Windows 7 Pro machine to Windows 11 Pro. Actually, a couple of years ago, we had to get an "extra" Windows 10 machine just to do our taxes, because TurboTax that year would not run on Windows 7 any longer. So that machine was strictly for taxes; we kept running everything else on the old Windows 7 laptop, because I didn't like Windows 10.
But Microsoft is not so gradually forcing everyone into this MS 365 business where everything is in the "cloud" and you pay an annual subscription fee, subject to being raised any time, and that's not for me.
The Hardware Story So Far
Just buying the Dell was a real trip. Both the computer and the phone auto-mazes that you have to go through are extremely frustrating. It's a matter of which you are most comfortable with to go through the maze, whether by smart phone or by computer. I am most comfortable with the computer, so that's where I ultimately wound up for a few days.
I wound up in chat mode with a sales guy in India. Ultimately settled on and ordered the Latitude 9440 2 in 1, with the touch screen and all the new bells and whistles. If I'm finally going to upgrade after all these years, I may as well do it right. We were in email as well as chat mode to settle on a deal, and he emailed me a pretty good offer, in detail. As soon as I notified him that funds were transferred he would pull the trigger and my new computer, new docking station, new extra screen and new wireless mouse would be on their way.
He also assured me that MS Office Pro Plus 2021 for 1 computer would be pre-loaded on the machine.
Then he disappeared.
The very next morning I emailed him with the go-ahead; no response. For two more days I tried to get back in contact with him with no luck. His phone number was on his emails, but our Charity Mobile phone plan does not include foreign phone numbers.
Frustrated, I gave up on Dell and went to Amazon. Found all the same stuff, at almost the same prices; only thing was that I couldn't get MS Office 2021 preloaded. (And that turned out to be the biggest single problem I would encounter.)
Amazon was great, as usual; everything came in quickly. I set it up and started getting familiar with it, and found a problem with the camera. It said "I can't find your camera", even though I could see it, right there.
Grrrr!
More going through the Dell problem rat maze, for hours. I did everything the rat maze told me to do, and it just kept coming back with the stupid "I can't find your camera" taunt.
Finally took it in to Digital Cowboys, the local experts around here. A Digital Cowboy went through the Dell rat maze a whole lot faster than I did, and did a lot more besides while I waited. He even downloaded another camera driver. It stil said "I can't find your camera".
All this was for free; they do walk-in diagnostics for free. But I would have to leave it there for a few days to run serious diagnostics, and there's a charge for that.
So, I left it there and set up my old Windows 7 machine so I could keep up with my emails. After a couple of days, they found that it was an actual hardware problem; the camera itself was broken or something, but it was still under warranty.
(Again, no charge, because it wasn't fixed. Digital Cowboys are great!)
Here we go again with the Dell customer support automatic rat maze.
Started working with the old computer and the new computer both online side by side, because I couldn't see my emails on the new system yet; details will be in the next "software story" below. I can do my website work on either machine, but I can only see email on the old one. That's another horror story.
Had to look at the back of the computer to find the tiny little spot that has the product number on it for warranty purposes, and it was mostly Chinese characters, except for the number I needed and, guess what, a "Made In China" notice. Right.
This time the rat maze landed me in the Philippines, where a Dell techie lady took over the new machine for a quite long session. She went even deeper than Digital Cowboys, uninstalling and downloading different drivers, rebooting multiple times, getting the "I can't find your camera" taunt over and over again. Ultimately came to the same conclusion, that the camera itself is bad.
So she put in a warranty claim for me.
This is me, waiting for a call from a local authorized Dell service center for an appointment to bring my brand-new laptop in to get the brand-new camera replaced.
The Software Story So Far
Unless you get it preloaded on a new computer, it may be impossible to get MS Office Pro Plus 2021 for 1 computer on an existing system.
During all the fooling around with hardware issues I kept getting these messages that my memory was getting full and if it hit some point it would shut my email down.
It kind of led me to establish an @outlook.com email account. I really need to keep my old @earthlink.net account, but it wouldn't let me change it. I found a way to set up my @earthlink.net account as a sort of alternate or twin email, so that whatever goes to either one goes to the other (I hope).
When I try to click on the increase storage option, it dumps me into a thing called one drive, which links my phone to my computer. I don't want to do that; my computer is for emails and my phone is for phone calls. I don't do computer work on my phone, and I don't make phone calls on my computer. All I want to do is increase my usable storage, which I shouldn't even have to do, and shouldn't be forced to do.
Anyway, I think I wound up being tricked or trapped into getting MS 365, and either an annual or a monthly, or both, payment deducted from my credit card.
I think. Nothing is certain here. I am "out of storage" and blocked from Outlook.
Not only that, but, I am now blocked from MS Office because of some unidentified "violation of terms of service"!!! ???
Here we go again with another rat maze.
You would think that spending thousands of hard earned dollars on a new system that it would come out of the box at least working.
It's too thin for a doorstop, and it's too light for a boat anchor.
I don't have time to mess with this now; I have to go to my first post-surgery physical therapy appointment. But I really feel tricked, and trapped, by what looks to me like a bait and switch trick.
I never had to "increase storage" for email in any other computer I ever owned, especially a brand new one that I hadn't even used the email yet.

Post-Operation Healing and Therapy
Cranky old post-op Vic. My neck hurts, getting old, falling apart, don't feel good, nobody loves me and I don't get no respect. All that aside, I'm doing so good I almost can't stand myself.Still in recovery mode from a posterior cervical laminoplasty on the C3 through C7 neck vertebrae, and beginning therapy mode. The goal is to increase strength, articulation and range of motion in my whole right arm. Not wearing the neck brace anymore and I have resumed driving.
Just completed my first therapy session, which was only measurements of range of motion, articulation and strength of my right arm as compared to my left. But for me, at this point, it was a real workout. Which is a good thing. I have daily exercises to do, and a whole battery of therapy sessions scheduled.
I had the operation on a Thursday, got out of the hospital and went home the following Saturday, and that Sunday, my whole right arm felt dead, like it was made out of lead, and it was all I could do to move it. I think it was because the anesthesia and stronger hospital medications had worn off.
But the next day, Monday, it wasn't so heavy and I could move it. For the rest of that week, I couldn't make the sign of the cross, or salute. Gradually I could, with great difficulty. It's getting better. Problem handling a fork, knife and spoon with my right hand. Still under orders not to bend or pick anything up off the floor, but I think I might try to genuflect properly in Church this Sunday. If I hold onto a pew it might be safer than bowing. We'll see.
I was already having trouble genuflecting without holding onto something before the operation; I'll be happy if I can get back to that point.
Sorry to be taking so long to get things out on the website, but my right hand keeps making typing mistakes. It'll get better.

have u looked at Ubuntu.. I made the transfer from M$ to ubuntu about 15 yrs ago.. what a relief.. never going back..ever..
u can test run ubuntu on ur new laptop for free..download online from ubuntu.com or buy a usb memory stick with it on there and boot up on the stick..
ubunut has gotten so easy/so identical to M$ that u will forget which system u are on,.. and the freedom is wonderful..
hope u at least look into it..

The Good News:
Finally got connected with an actual person at MS, got 365 deleted (and refunded), got office pro plus 2021 installed (and charged), and I'm as happy as a mouse in a corn crib. The new system works beautifully. The only problem left is the nonfunctional camera, which is to be replaced whenever the new one comes into the service center.
The Bad News:
Now having unpredictable episodes of vertigo, since Thursday night. Have to hold onto something or sit down when it happens. Had this once before (see the beginning paragraphs of the Contraception Pervesion page), treated for it by my doctor at the VA; it was an inner-ear problem where "crystals" in one of the eustacian tubes breaks loose and causes the problem; then, eventually, settles somewhere and the vertigo goes away.
But, Kettering Brain and Spine, where the surgery was done, lists loss of balance and sense of uprightness among the possible after effects of spinal surgery. So I don't know what the cause is yet. Have messaged both my doctor and the surgeon, don't expect to hear back until after the weekend.
So, driving is out for now, and going to miss mass again today.

A Dell techie showed up at the house and replaced the camera in the new computer. So now everything is working as it should, except that either MS Windows 11 or MS Office 2021 won't let me get pictures off my phone or off my old computer unless and until I buy a subscription to MS 365. Oh well. I can live with that limitation.
The vertigo has largely subsided so long as I don't do anything sudden; the slowdown has adversely affected my exercises and my therapy progress, but I expect to get back to more normal soon; still making progress and my arm is getting measurably better. Just a little unsteady on my feet.

Completed physical therapy, still doing exercises, especially for my right arm. Completed Vertigo therapy, still doing head and neck exercises. Vertigo is gone; still have a little problem with sense of uprightness and stability (balance) when I first stand up, when I stand for a long time, and when I walk very far without being able to touch something - furniture, a wall, whatever. A cane helps a lot, or, holding Marcie's hand.
May not be going back to work. Still working toward it, but, I'm also pretty old for that kind of work. The medical stuff was light enough, but some of the stuff I delivered was really quite heavy.
Still able to do my duty as Chief Dish Washer and Marcie's Sous Chef in the kitchen.
When I can't do that any more, or kill spiders and open pickle jars, you'll probably find me parked out by the curb. Till then, I'll just keep plugging along.
If I can build my arm up better than it is now, and if I can get to a point of an always normal sense of balance, I will go back to work.
