Czar Alexander II, the Abraham Lincoln of the Russias

Perhaps a better Czar for Putin to emulate than Peter the Great?

My Lithuanian maternal grandmother, may she rest in peace, spoke of the Czar Alexander II as being "the Abraham Lincoln of the Russias". Lithuania was one of those "Russias", and she was the descendent of Serfs who were freed by Alexander II. Serfs were "property", owned by whoever owned the land they lived on. People went with the property, and were a part of it. They were actual slaves of the landowners. After the emancipation, they were actual citizens, who could own property themselves, grow their own crops, prosper by the work of their own hands and get ahead in life.
