American national identity, like American citizen identity, is now so blurred and inclusive as to have lost all distinction. Once, to be an American meant something, way back when American identity was still separate and distinct. We can say the same thing about Christian identity, and even, God help us, Roman Catholic identity. When a Cardinal Archbishop of New York can proudly walk down the streets of New York leading a St. Patrick's Day Gay Pride parade, New York Catholicism has lost its distinct identity.
