A social construct (or construction) is a belief universally held by a population describing an object or a concept. A set of commonly held social constructs define a distinct people or nation. Social constructs come to be through Essentialism; the the real-world essence of the object or concept. Social Constructionism is the 'science' of determining and defining how a society's defining social constructs came to be, assuming a priori that social constructs are man-made. Thus, Social Constructionism stands opposed to and at odds with Essentialism.
