Whether rightly or wrongly, I take enrollment in the Brown Scapular to be a Catholic Faith version of the required American Military entry oath to defend the constitution against all enemies. If you wear the scapular, you are called to defend the faith. Defending the faith, like defending the nation, is not something that can be passively done. Once you put on the scapular, you may not just stand there and let opposition to faith - i.e., opposition to God - just march by right in front of you and not do or say something about it.
