They were almost an insult to their betters because they began to compete with them for wealth, status and cultural standing, and they were envied by the poor for their success. In the USA, where they were free to operate at the most liberty, even their employees became "middle class" and many of them became wealthy even without starting a business, because, in Bourgeois-dominant culture, money flows downhill, sideways and even upward.
