No true evil conspirator ever wants his conspiracy to be uncovered. Even when it is uncovered, he will still sick to it, and keep pretending that it is not a conspiracy and that he is not a conspirator. Examples abound, from Adam Schiff to Jessie Smollett to Theodore McCarrick. "That's my story, and I'm sticking to it", is the knee-jerk stratagem of the conspiratorial liar.
