Politically speaking, Independence is individual, and dependency is collective and communal. Individual citizen independence is what made America great; collective dependency is what makes all Socialist states not so great. They are incompatible political ideas. Independence is Liberty; Socialism necessarily crushes Liberty, in the interest of elite rule over an obedient, dependent mass of social-sameness, or social "Equity".
