My Lithuanian maternal grandmother, may she rest in peace, spoke of the Czar Alexander II as being "the Abraham Lincoln of the Russias". Lithuania was one of those "Russias", and she was the descendent of Serfs who were freed by Alexander II. Serfs were "property", owned by whoever owned the land they lived on. People went with the property, and were a part of it. They were actual slaves of the landowners. After the emancipation, they were actual citizens, who could own property themselves, grow their own crops, prosper by the work of their own hands and get ahead in life.
Current international events put Vladimir Putin on my mind, because he is reputed to be seeing himself as a modern version of Peter the Great, and he is reputed to be intent on rebuilding not so much the USSR but the older Czarist Russian Empire.
Why?
And why does he fear (if he does) NATO and the West? NATO is quite strictly defensive, not offensive. And not very good at being defensive. They pose no threat to Russia, or anyone else. Is he paranoid? Neither does the USA pose any real threat to Russia, unless Russia gives it cause.
The West, from the close of Word War II, has been in a continuous posture of being ready to be attacked by Russia, and not to invade or otherwise make war on Russia without provocation. Quite the opposite.
Grandma spoke glowingly of Alexander II. I never heard her mention Peter the Great, or any other Czar.
Today is Septuagesima Sunday, beginning the 2.5 weeks until Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. I read the readings before Mass so that I might better "hear" them spoken during Mass. Here they are:

But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

Putin claims that he is not a Communist. If that is true, he is not an enemy of Western Civilization and he has no legitimate reason to fear anything from Western Civilization, because we don't go about conquering anybody else. That's what Communists do, not us.
This war with Ukraine is hitting the point of national suicidal insanity.
It is pointless. If he continues this bleeding of both nations in this war of attrition and he eventually wins, he will have won a vast wasteland who's surviving population will hate him, and he will not be particularly popular with his own Russian citizens, or what's left of them. Everything worth anything on the battleground is being destroyed. Hearts are being filled with a terrible sense of vengefulness.
What is called for in Russia is not so much a Czar or an emperor so much as it is an emancipator and a peacemaker.
The readings remind us that is is never too late to make a contribution, it is never too late for redemption, and it is the mark of a truly good leader to recognize he is on an the wrong path and turn around.
- Russia doesn't need Ukraine.
- What Russia needs is friendly relations with Ukraine.
I'm sure many in Ukraine, in the USA and elsewhere are convinced that Putin is evil, demonic, diabolical, and beyond redemption. But no one is beyond redemption. How often the first have been last and the last have been first we do not know, yet. But no one knows really who is saved and who is not, because there is but one judge of salvation, and I am not Him, and neither are you. Maybe that's a little unsettling for the Protestants and Evangelists out there who "know" they are saved, but maybe they should be unsettled, because they don't know. They cannot know.
There is no assurance of salvation; there is no assurance of damnation.
We have been praying a lot for Trump, and for Musk, and Zelensky and Netanyahu; maybe we all need to pray for Putin, too.
He is the key to peace.
With God, nothing is impossible.
The only thing Truth has going for Him in this world is us.
The restoration of Truth = Reality in the hearts and minds of men is now totally dependent upon you and me; if we don't do it, it won't get done.
