1 Samuel 8 marked the birth of man-made politics.
The people of Israel had no need of a king, for they had the Lord, they had the law and they had judges. But they insisted on a king, like all the other peoples all around them, to lead them and fight their wars for them. This displeased the Lord, and it displeased Samuel, the last judge; but the Lord said to Samuel, give them what they clamor for, telling them what their kings will do to them. You would do well to read it. It was a severe warning of things that have come to pass.
- They wanted to be like other people around them.
- They were blurring their separate and distinct Israeli identity.
What they had in God's law was the highest morality in the world. What they had in kings was some kings and their servants exempted from the law, and some kings changing the law, and some kings becoming the law. Where the law protected people, the kings used people, for their own purposes.
All according to the fallen nature of man.
Fallen man should not be put in charge of moral law.
The New Testament tells us how our Lord Jesus brought a new law, which was the old law, dropping the complex dietary and cleansing laws and the Sabbath restrictions, instituting the Eucharist and moving the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, the day of His Resurrection (Acts 20:7).
Recognizing the worldly authority of kings, he said to "Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesars; and unto God the things that are God's" (Matt 22:21).
The era of Renaissance/Enlightenment/Modernism gave birth to the anti-Christian-authority revolt of Protestantism, the fracturing of Christianity, and the bloody international reformation wars that raged throughout Europe in the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries.
It marked the beginning of worldly kings taking charge of religions.
Kings made themselves popes of the denominations in their realms.
Religious persecution reigned supreme everywhere in Europe and the British Isles. To belong to the wrong denomination was treason, often punishable by death. Catholics were slaughtered everywhere, and denominations slaughtered other denominations.
It was to escape that denominational persecution by Protestant kings that the Pilgrims came to America. Each American colony established its own official colonial "Christian" denomination in its founding document, as we see in the Chart of American Colonial Religions.
After America freed herself from British rule, the very first clause of the very first amendment to the American Bill Of Rights was the freedom of worship clause:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
The federal government was prohibited from establishing any national denomination, and it was prohibited from interfering with the practice of and the living of life in the faith of any Colonial denomination.
That the whole nation was Christian, in the Protestant interpretation of that word, is without question. That the first amendment intended to free the Christian religions, and not other than Christian religions, is also without question. They wouldn't have even thought of such a thing.
What has been established in American law is a separation of ecclesial law from moral law, with ecclesial law being a private sector matter, and moral law being in the domain of the government. But note well the fact that, from the beginning, American moral law was Christian.
You can see that separation in the Commandments. Where Catholicism and the denominations differed in theology - the first great commandment - they all shared alike the same morality - the second great commandment.
- Our government is prohibited from addressing theology.
- Our government is mandated to address morality.
That is the only proper separation of Church and state in America.
Christian morality is how American legislators, executors and adjudicators of law know right from wrong. That murder, theft, dishonesty, adultery, etc., are wrong. That the right to live out the Christian faith is right.
We always held that the founding, declaring and constituting of America provided the world's best opportunity for the denominations to be awakened and returned to the full faith and returned to the one body of Christ. But, perhaps not. At least not yet. The common morality should be and certainly could be a uniting force; however, even the Christian moral law is becoming diverse, and not so Christian any more.
As denominations change, as denominations always do, and as denominations continuously spin off new denominations, and as "morality" changes with them, the question has become which denomination(s) should American government base the morality of its laws upon?
And is it (are they) still actually Christian?
"There is no essential doctrine such that if we can agree upon it we can agree to differ about the rest: as for instance, to accept immortality but deny the Trinity. A man will call himself a Christian though he denies the unity of the Christian Church; he will call himself a Christian though he denies the presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament; he will cheerfully call himself a Christian though he denies the Incarnation. No; the quarrel is between the Church and the anti-Church – the Church of God and anti-God – the Church of Christ and Anti-Christ." [Hilaire Belloc]
They all think they are, and they all call themselves Christian, and most everyone considers them to be Christian despite the critical observations of Hilaire Belloc. But the problem is, their morality, too, has changed. And here, we must include the Bergoglio Vatican and the USCCB among the "denominations", for their morality has changed, too, right along with all of the denominations of Protestantism.
So the question becomes, to which denomination(s) is (are) the American government to refer in considering the moral basis of law?
The pro-sodomy denominations? the pro-abortion denominations? The pro-divorce and remarriage denominations? The sex outside of marriage denominations?
I submit that real, original Christianity has not changed because it cannot change, and it can be found only in the oldest dogmas of the Church and in the original word of God. The Creeds, the Commandments and the Precepts. That is the sole Christianity the American government should be recognizing as the foundation of simple right versus wrong and the moral basis of American jurisprudence.
No other religion will do.
The 1854 Syllabus Of Errors of Pope Pius IX shows how far the denominations had drifted out from proper Christianity already by 1854. It has only gotten worse since then, with half of the world's Catholic population joining in on the errors. We have to wonder what Pius IX would think about obstinate unrepentant sinners like Biden receiving Communion in "Catholic" Churches.
In these closing days of the most important election in American history, President Trump is moving closer to the Christian Truth even as the Catholic hierarchy appears to be moving away from it. We can hope that it is not solely out of political strategy that we are hearing the Hail Mary prayer sung at his rallies and that he does indeed intend to reawaken the American sense of being a Christian nation.
If he is serious about it, President Trump could pick up the sword of Christianity at his rallies and at all appropriate times for him to call the nation to prayer, by leading us in prayer. Actual Christian prayer rather than a "moment of silence" or mere "thoughts and prayers". Nothing mushy; nothing half-assed; nothing indistinct about it.
Presidential Public Prayer, even if not done by the best motivation, could go a long way toward getting America turned back toward God, where they ought to be turned. And it might just turn President Trump himself more toward God and Godliness than he is now.
President Reagan invoked God's name and told us that if we ever forgot that we were a nation under God, then we would be a nation gone under. He carried 49 states in his last election.
President Trump could do likewise if he awakened the sleeping giant of all the devout Christians who are just sick of politics and political parties and see no one they can vote for.
If President Trump would turn the people toward God, the people will respond, and they will also turn toward him, and vote for him.
The only thing Truth has going for Him in this world is us.
The restoration of Truth = Reality in the hearts and minds of men is now totally dependent upon you and me; if we don't do it, it won't get done.
Pray for a strategic alliance between President Trump and excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano against the common conspiratorial criminality in the American and Catholic political parties.
