Sheriffs and Veterans and Citizens; Oh My!
County Sheriffs and Veterans should together form volunteer Minute-Man like County Militia units of the free citizenry.

The Representative Cop.
Your local County Sheriff is the only Police Officer in the nation who does not report to any higher appointed or elected official. The Sheriff is the only American Police Officer who is elected to office by the people of the County. Local Police are hired by and answerable to Mayors or Town Councils. State Police are hired by and answerable to Governors. US Marshals and FBI Agents are hired by and answerable to the President or his Attorney General. Only the Sheriff is elected by, representative of and answerable solely to the local People themselves. He knows them, and they know him.
For that reason, the County Sheriff is the most logical candidate to become the focal point and leader of any established Militia units. He would be the one to call up the Militia in cases of emergency of any kind, but especially invasion, or, more likely, unconstitutional incursions on County citizen rights by any higher levels of American Government.
If you were taught properly in your formative education, you know that America's first Militia, the Minute Men, formed up as defense forces against their own government, which was headed at that time by King George III. The Minute Men went about their personal business, but stood ready "at a minute's notice" to take up their arms and gather as a unit. Extra arms, ammunition and crew-served weapons - cannons - were kept in local armories and arsenals for that purpose.
Our increasingly pseudo-sophisticated, tyrannical government.
If you do not believe we have anything to fear from our own higher levels of government, let me refer you to our Declaration of Independence, where it says:
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
I invite you to go to the Declaration itself, and read all the "Facts" listed after that quote. Compare them to the "Facts" that exist today in our current government under Obamunism, item by item, line by line. What we are experiencing is modern variations of the exact same tyranny.
US Senators, supposedly representing States, are voting in the dark on legislation that is held secret from the States. US Congressmen, representing the People, are voting in the dark on legislation that is held secret from the People. US Justices, sitting on the Supreme Court, actively modify and re-write law that is before them for adjudication. Congress legislates, the President signs, and the Supreme Court favorably adjudicates law that is clearly and indisputably unconstitutional on many levels. Anyone with an old fashioned eight grade education can clearly see all of this for what it is.
The primary purpose of our Constitution is to protect us - the people - and to protect our Constitutionally guaranteed legal rights, from our own government. That is what makes us different from every other nation on earth. And that is what is being destroyed by Progressivism.
The American Military Veteran, sworn to uphold the Constitution.
Before he puts on any uniform and serves his country, the new American military recruit swears an oath to protect, not the nation, not the land, not the people, but the Constitution. Most real men, when they swear such an oath, keep to it for the rest of their lives, not merely for the term of service. It is important to them, or they never would have joined. For the most part, warriors lack the theatrics, showmanship, political ambitions, pseudo-sophistication and acting abilities of the politicians who take the same or similar oaths of office. They are in a much more serious business.
All American military, but especially American military police and special operations forces, should consider close association with their County Sheriff's office in some capacity as a second career after leaving the military. Perhaps they might even run for the Sheriff's office in their counties. Sheriffs should consider veterans first when hiring Deputies.
Army Special Forces are unique among all other Special Operations forces because their mission is to get themselves deep into enemy nations, and then recruit, equip, train and lead serious guerrilla forces deep behind enemy lines. The Green Berets are fluent in foreign languages, and besides their special operations warrior skills, they are skilled "diplomats", able to bargain, wheel and deal with every kind of local leader, from primitive tribal chieftains to warlords to mayors, in a very dangerous political game of guerrilla unit formation.
Think how much easier it might be for such men to organize and train some serious militia units in their own home counties, where the terrain and the people are all well known and friendly.
The County Sheriff is the logical guy to call up the Militia as needed.
Sheriffs should consider a liaison office with an appointed, paid County Militia officer. Ranges and other facilities should be increased as needed and shared, to provide marksmanship training and military training for civilians. Many people in America own guns, but some number of them have never even fired one, and have never received any instruction at all. Probably for every one citizen gun owner who is expert with weapons, there are two who are novices. And no one who has never served is even aware of the need for working as a team, let alone how to do it.
Passing a County version of the Fair Tax would be good for the County, it would eliminate every other form of taxes currently existing in the County, it would be simple, it would provide a County-level Pre-bate, and it would be a very simple thing to adjust as needed. It would attract both citizens and businesses to the County, and it would pay for the new requirements of the County Militia, and then some.
Them's my thoughts on it, for what they're worth.

Great article and a good suggestion. Have you read Dr. Edwin Vieira's book on forming the Constitutional militias in the several states? He is a Harvard professor and well-grounded in constitutional laws and issues. He is also a Catholic gentleman.
