VA Canceling Veteran On-Line Access to VA Health Care
New "Extra Layer of Protection" Website Update Permanently Blocks Many If Not Most Veterans Who are Using Particular Computers/Operating Systems/Browsers

Computers and smart phones are wonderful things, until populations become dependent on them, and then they become terrible things. It's kind of like how the plains Indians became a horse people, dependent on the horse, and how current day Americans are a car people, dependent on the car. Note well how the Marxocrat Party is working to destroy the American car industry and establish 15-minute smart cities, ostensibly to save the planet from something or other.
The "ostensibly" part is how they lie.
I've been logging onto the VA website for I don't know how many years, and thereby keeping my prescriptions up to date, keeping track of my appointments, and using website secure messaging to talk directly to my doctor, Scott Shaw, MD, and the Dayton VA Green Team. Loved it.
Watching my prescriptions, if one needed refill I would put a checkmark on it and hit the update button. If one dropped off the list, I could secure-message Dr. Shaw and he would refill if for me or have me come in for another appointment. Always came in for checkups and other appointments, and made appointments, online. I only live a few miles away, but going in is always a hassle, especially finding parking anywhere close to the door. So the website was a beautiful thing.
But now I am kicked off of that website, and cannot establish a logon to the new one, https://www.va.gov/.
Creating a new Login.gov account is apparently impossible on my system. Some months ago I started receiving email warnings about an upcoming website change that would require a new login to the va.gov site, or portal to this one, or whatever. So I established that login, and forgot about it. What, me worry?
Now, guess what, I cannot login any more. Followed the "Create you Login.gov account" instructions to the letter, and they do not work for me. It says my email account is already in use (it is, by me) and when I try to login using it, it won't accept my password. When I hit "forgot my password" and it sends my email a code, and I put that code in, it gives me a chance to change my password, which I do. Then it sends me to the login screen and, guess what, it won't accept that password.
I actually physically went in to the facility to straighten this out, and the bureaucrat at the veteran advocate desk sent me to another bureaucrat at another desk having to do with the website, and that bureaucrat did nothing but hand me printouts of all the same "Create you Login.gov account" instructions I had already been through umpty-ump times, to no avail.
They swore, solemnly, that if I called the number on the printout I would get help to go through all the steps to get my new login. That was not true.
Frustrated, back at home, went through the phone rigmarole involving the nearly endless robotic voice menu maze to finally get to where you get to talk to an actual human being who will lead you through the steps, and it goes into "hold" mode playing disgusting music periodically interrupted by the giant VA welcome message that begins with "if you are thinking about suicide...", for hours, with no one ever coming on the line.
Went through this three times. I think there are so many calls that they are too occupied with getting veterans logged in and/or failing in that, to ever getting around to all of us who are on hold. Either that, or they are purposely not responding to veterans on hold.
Gave up and just called the VA on the phone and went through the phone menu maze to get to Dr. Shaw's Green Team. After the considerable amount of time it took to convince the Green Team person that their phone number login procedure didn't work for me, got assurance that they would make sure my prescriptions were checked and give a message to Dr. Shaw for me regarding Tai Chi.
I'm all done with the website. The Green Team gal said I could depend on her and the team by phone, 24/7 and they were always here for me.
Right.
Tomorrow is the last of my eight prescribed Tai Chi sessions to improve my sense of balance, and I asked Dr. Shaw to prescribe another eight, because it is helping, and I'm almost at the point where I can raise one leg off the floor at at time in the right/left "heaven and earth" movement/pose. I think if I can ever get past that hurdle I'll be OK. Close, but no cigar, yet.
Supposedly, that message was passed on to Dr. Shaw several days ago, but I have not had any email that typically comes for any new appointments, which is what all the Tai Chi sessions are.
I have no other way to contact Dr. Shaw, see my prescriptions or my appointments; not even in person. There is no other way.
By design.
I use my phone for phone calls only, and text messages. I use the computer for all emails and all internet activity.
Like I said at the beginning, computers and smart phones are wonderful things, until populations become dependent on them, and then they become terrible things.

Vic: BZ-Navy speak for Bravo Zulu, keep up good work. Your commentary today made me check the Va.gov site for my DAV status/meds/appts and access. Worked for me, so our better "guardian" angels seem to have worked at least for me, actually I have overworked him so much for 70 years now and His Boss hasn't let him slack off yet even though I did for too long. Now hopefully with Sir GA-not supposed to name your angel...Sir Guardian Angel is my respectful name for him, his immediate boss, St. Michael, Mary, and the CO have blessed me and I hope to discern why and how to pass it on...good luck on retry; as you said I try most of my VA online as it keeps us out of masked up covid chaos hospitals, not yet but in next 42 days who knows. Pax, Deus Vult!

The Tai Chi sensei heard me crying in my beer about the situation and got involved; she contacted a person in VA who was computer savvy and I got a call from her. We set up a meeting for today at 9 Am, to bring my laptop.
So, yesterday, Sunday, I decided to give it one more shot before disconnecting it from everything and packing it up, and, guess what, I got on the website!
Something changed. Until that login, the site image was all screwed up; there was no color, no images, just a flat white background with print, and even visible HTML code here and there.
Anyway, once I got on and it looked normal, it acted like I was half way through the process of changing over to the new login method, and started prompting me to do stuff. I had to take pictures of my license, front and back, with my cell phone, get them onto the computer and was able to complete the process from that point on.
The only thing I hate is that every time I log on, from now on, it will send a code to my phone, not my email, and I have only minutes to enter that code before it expires. That means I have to have my phone with me every tine I log on with the computer. (Most of my writing is done in the wee hours of the morning, before I get Marcie up at 5 AM.)
Went to the appointed meeting with Sheila, because I wanted to find out if there was a way to change that so it would send the code to my email, which is on my computer. (No, it can't be done currently.)
She confirmed that there was another release that went in on the 18th, and that's probably what straightened out my problem. People using browsers like Chrome, Explorer, Edge, etc., had no problem, but I started using DuckDuckGo some time ago as browser, not just a search engine.
Back when I was doing software we didn't put any new release or any new product online until we tested it on all platforms that could access it. But, that was then and this is now.
Anyway, I have no more problems with the VA website.
